Special Events

Santa Fe Classic Theater is dedicated to presenting works of classic playwrights, from Sophocles to Shakespeare to Shaw.

In addition to the annual production, Shakespeare in the Garden, we host a series of special events.

Pre-Show Shakespeare Talks

First come, first served, on select Sundays this Shakespeare season – July 28, August 4, and August 11 – SFCT will present free talks by renowned experts to discuss various aspects of performing Shakespeare. Beginning nightly at 6 PM until 6:30 PM, and with discussion thereafter, your ticket to Twelfth Night will give you entry to Shakespeare Talks by the following local experts:

SUNDAY JULY 28 | Claudia Hauer, one of its professors, will speak on “Cross-Dressing and Role-Playing in Shakespeare's Twelfth Night."The play is the greatest of many in Shakespeare’s canon dealing with issues of sexual identity, in this case of identical twins cast in a shipwreck on a foreign shore. Claudia Hauer has a PhD in classics, and has taught Shakespeare extensively in the interdisciplinary program at St. John's College.

SUNDAY AUGUST 4 | Krishnan Venkatesh, our second presenter from St. John's will talk about Shakespeare's plays and life more generally, with a view to Twelfth Night as an exemplar.  Krishnan Venkatesh, a graduate of Cambridge University in England, has traveled and taught throughout Europe before arriving at St. John's in 1989.

SUNDAY AUGUST 11 | Santa Fe Classic Theater's Kelly Kiernan Briggs will speak on her direction of Twelfth Night. This year's production values embody folk art in the Balkans, the location of ancient Illyria and the setting of the play. Kelly Kiernan Briggs holds a BFA in Theatre Arts and has worked in professional regional theatre and film for over thirty years. She trained extensively in classical theatre during her tenure as a young company member of the American Stratford Festival Theatre with artistic director and Broadway producer, Louis Burke. She had the privilege to study Shakespeare with John Barton of the Royal Shakespeare Company, and Chekhov with Professor Murray Biggs of Yale University. This is her fifth season producing and directing Shakespeare in the Garden at the Santa Fe Botanical Garden.
